1200 - 1320 MW USC Coal Fired Power Plant Project

Project Details

The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) has given highest priority to power sector development in the country and has committed to making electricity available to all citizens by 2021 (Power Division 2015). The GoB has further extended its vision for power supply out to 2030 and prepared the Power System Master Plan (PSMP) in 2010. In line with this strategy, Bangladesh-owned Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited “CPGCBL” signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and Sumitomo Corporation (hereinafter referred to as “Sumitomo”) intend to form a joint venture (JV) and propose to develop a 1,200 MW (2 x 600 MW) coal-fired power plant in Dhalghata and Kalarmarchara Unions, Maheshkhali Upazila, Cox’s Bazar District, Chittagong Division, Bangladesh. The Project is based on pulverised coal fired steam power plant technology utilising a modified Rankine Cycle for electric power generation. Ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired combustion systems operate at higher temperatures and pressures and can achieve enhanced thermal efficiencies by 2- 3% compared to conventional sub-critical pulverized coal combustion units. The Site area for the Project is 589 ha out of which 491 ha of land is allocated for the USC power plant, ash disposal areas and future CCGT area. The project likely to have land acquisition and physical displacement. Land acquisition and resettlement involved with the project.
